HOW IT ALL BEGAN

my travel story

Travel has always been in my blood.

As young adults, both of my parents spent extended periods of time overseas, even nurturing their long-distance relationship through handwritten letters from places like Colombia and Venezuela.

After they got married, they settled down and had me and my siblings, but kept their adventurous spirits alive and instilled that love for travel in us kids too. Over the years, we’ve traveled together to Guatemala, South America, Europe, and Canada — plus plenty of trips in our home country of the United States, including a big RV trip out west and a rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike. I’m so grateful for these experiences and how they broadened my worldview from an early age.

Because of those trips, I leapt at the chance to spend a semester in the Middle East in college. In those four months in 2008, I climbed inside a pyramid in Egypt, slept in a Bedouin camp in Jordan, lived with a Palestinian family in the West Bank, worked at a kibbutz in Israel, got scrubbed down at a Turkish bath in Istanbul, saw countless ancient ruins, and much, MUCH more. It was the single most transformative period of my life, and cemented for me that intentional travel — where you connect with locals, learn about the history and culture, and truly engage with your surroundings — can change everything.

Wadi Rum, Jordan (2008)

That said, this isn’t one of those stories where one incredible travel experience made me drop everything and devote my life to traveling the world. Things were a lot more conventional first: I went to law school, and spent nearly a decade working as a lawyer. Like a lot of people, though, the COVID-19 pandemic caused me to reevaluate my life and my priorities, and I found that the world was calling again.

So I saved up, and THEN I dropped everything (okay…gently placed things down and found a responsible tenant for my home): I quit my job as a lawyer, and I took a break from the 9-to-5 life to spend a year chasing beautiful views, meaningful moments, and enriching cultures in old cities and beyond.

my travel philosophy

001.

WHY

Travel can be a powerful tool for connection, learning, and growth. Everywhere I go has something to teach me about myself, others, or both.

002.

HOW

It’s my duty to travel as ethically, responsibly, and sustainably as I can. I don’t always get it right, but I can always try to do better the next time.

003.

WHAT

Travel is most meaningful when I engage with the local culture, seek out hidden gems, and embrace moments of surprise and serendipity.
