The Netherlands is part of the Schengen area. Citizens of many countries, including the USA, do not need to apply for a visa in advance of arrival.

Trains in the Netherlands are reliable, frequent, and easy, and are the best way to get around the country.

The Netherlands has some good hostels, if that’s a match for your price point and travel style, but otherwise hotels are your best bet.
