A Short Guide to Peel, Isle of Man

Peel is one of the most popular destinations on the Isle of Man, and a must-see while visiting the island. With its historic castle ruins, informative museums, and seaside promenade, it’s worth an extended stop during your trip to the Isle of Man.

Here’s a short guide to visiting Peel, including how to get there, what to do, where to eat, and where to stay.

How to Get to Peel

Peel is the most notable spot on the Isle of Man that unfortunately can’t be reached via the island’s historic steam railway or one of its electric railway lines.

As a result, I recommend traveling to Peel by bus. You can find current bus schedules here.

Things to Do in Peel

The ancient Peel Castle is the top thing to see in Peel. Visitors can walk around the outside, but I recommend visiting the interior as well, if only to see the cathedral ruins. A self-guided audio tour is included with your entrance ticket.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the House of Manannan, a museum dedicated to the history of the Isle of Man — from early Celtic people to Vikings to the island’s Christian conversion and much more.

Talk a walk around Peel Harbor, which has a lovely promenade and plenty of fishing boats to admire in the marina.

Just outside of Peel (and accessible by bus) is the Knockaloe Centre — the site of World War I’s largest internment camp, where 30,000 civilians were held between 1914 and 1919.

Open only on the weekend, the Manx Transport Heritage Museum is dedicated to the history of transportation on the Isle of Man.

Hike to Corrin’s Tower, which is perched on a hill overlooking Peel.

Visit the ruins of St. Peter’s Church, where little other than a single wall and a bell tower remain standing after a 20th-century fire.

Where to Eat in Peel

Breakfast

For breakfast, head to D.D.’s, which serves up all-day breakfasts.

Lunch

Stop for lunch at Harbour Lights Cafe & Restaurant, a popular spot near the water.

Dinner

Sit down for dinner at The Boatyard, which specializes in local seafood.

Where to Stay in Peel

Many visitors to the Isle of Man use Douglas as a home base and take day trips to other destinations, including Peel. This is what I did, and I recommend it — it’s much easier to get around the island from Douglas, and there are more lodging options there.

But if you’d like to stay overnight in Peel, check out these options:

CASTLE VIEWS | Hollie’s Beach House, located conveniently along the harbor, has views of Peel Castle, the beach, and more.

RENTAL HOME | If you’re traveling with a group, consider staying at the Teazles holiday house.

COUNTRY HOUSE | Stay a bit outside Peel at Knockaloe Beg Farm, which features a sauna and hot tub.

Final Thoughts

Peel is an essential stop during any visit to the Isle of Man. Personally, it was one of my favorite spots on the island — in particular, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the House of Manannan, and the castle ruins were wonderful. I’d love to spend more time in Peel on a future trip to the Isle of Man!
